Attitude
To complete your mental shifting and make sure you feel like you are a mermaid, you will have to act like a mermaid. Act however you feel your mermaid side would act, and let that part of you take over. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Name: First, you can choose a mermaid name. This is optional, but it really does help give your mermaid self more personality. If you can, base your name on mythology, folklore or something related to the sea. Look through baby name websites if you can't think of a good name yourself. Try not to pick a stereotypical mermaid name like "Ariel" - be creative! Anything that comes to you can be your mermaid name, as long as you are able to relate it to your inner mermaid.
Learn: Learn all about mermaids so you can tell anyone who asks about them. Learn as much as possible on mermaid lore. Search everything about mermaids and learn every little detail about them. Most cultures have some form of merpeople lore, and mermaid fairytales and myths abound. Also, learn about the ocean and know everything about your home. Being knowledgeable about the sea and your mermaid self will make shifting much easier. Also, if anyone asks you anything mermaid or ocean related, you'll always have a quick answer for them!
Now, using all the things you have learned from this website, you are going to try and convince yourself (and others), that you are a mermaid. You can do this in the most cliche ways possible, but it will definitely help you!
Decorate: Make your room, or even your whole house, feel as mermaid-like as possible! This will not only help you feel like a mermaid, it will make others who see your home wonder about you. Here are some ideas:
-Get fish! They're not only great pets, but they're also very relaxing to watch, low-maintenance, and will make you feel like a mermaid!
- Shells. Put shells everywhere! Anything you have that's shell-related, use it! Have lots of shells hanging up and placed around your home. Use shell plates, coasters, and even cups, if you can.
-Put pictures of anything ocean-related, anywhere! Just print out any inspiring ocean pictures, and cover your walls. Seeing these every day will no doubt awaken your inner mermaid.
-If you can, try painting your room in an oceany color, like blue or green.
-Surround your bed with fake coral, plants, fake seaweed, and anything else that can make you feel like you're under the sea. You can even make your own ocean props!
-Get flowing curtains that will look like waves. Make them blue, green or purple to give your room that ocean feel.
-Use treasure chests or other sea related boxes to store your jewellery in.

Acting: This is the fun part where you want to act like a mermaid so well, that others will start to believe you are one! Don't tell them what you're doing, and just make a game out of acting like your mermaid self. Go crazy with it!
-First, make certain you know what type of mermaid you are and how that affects your character. Are you kind and playful? Cold and mysterious? Refer to your F-shift to act your part well.
- Subtly show off your mermaid knowledge. Act very interested when people talk about the ocean, or anything mermaid related, after all, you are a mermaid! Whenever someone asks you, depending on your mermaid personality, either impress them with your vast knowledge by talking about fish, currents and tides, or try to quickly change the subject to hide your true self and make people wonder about your mysterious attitude.
- Watch movies and TV shows about mermaids. Make sure to see The Little Mermaid, as it is probably the most famous mermaid movie! Also, you can see Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and She Creature. There are few mermaid TV shows, but one of THE BEST is the Australian series H2O: Just Add Water. You should definitely watch this as it is about three girls who become mermaids in high school and are trying to keep their magical powers secret.
-Change the subject when people talk about mermaids. You have to keep your secret! Your silence on the subject will make people all the more intrigued.
-Wear mermaid style clothes and jewellery (see Appearance page).
- Bring water EVERYWHERE and drink frequently, but in small amounts. This will make it seem like you're very thirsty, all the time, but in reality you won't be drinking any more than anybody else.
- When you talk to people have a sweet, gentle and lower voice.
- Drop hints about your mermaidness, but not too much. You want to be subtle.
- No matter your mer personality, always be mysterious!
- When people talk about mermaids, act nervous or scared and change the subject. You are a true mermaid and you can't have people learning your secret! This will make people all the more intrigued.
- If you want to add some drama and really make everyone believe you, you can act like every time you touch water, you will turn into a mermaid! Act panicked when you get water on you. Don't go wild and run around screaming, just act nervous and quickly dry yourself off or dash away quickly.
-Sing! If you are a naturally talented singer, sing as much as possible, and sing mermaid songs! You can look up siren songs and learn them so you can sound like a siren singer (see Songs page under Extra). If you are not so talented (like me!), just hum mysterious siren tunes and listen to a lot of mermaid music (see Songs page). If you want, you can even tell people you CAN'T sing in front of them. This will make them wonder if you're hiding something...
-Keep a mermaid diary. Record all of your experiences, paste in pictures, make drawings, and don't forget to write "I am a mermaid" 15 times every day.
-Don't forget to visit any body of water as often as possible, and swim whenever you can!
